Gdansk Tips & Tricks

Generally speaking you shouldn't experience too many problems in Poland, which apart from the occasional public stoning, is pretty similar to most other European countries. Here are a few tips and pieces of advice that could prove handy…

Language

Most young Poles speak very good English, whilst many more are competent, so you shouldn’t have any problems delivering your finest chat up lines, or asking random punters to point you back towards your hotel

Money

Most ATMs in Poland accept international credit and debit cards, or else you can change pounds, euros and other major currencies at bureaux de change (Kantors) around the city.

Girls

Polish girls are both very hot and completely charming, and after a weekend in Gdansk you'll probably have declared your undying love to a least two dozen 'dziewczyny'. They are receptive to wannabe Casanovas, but a cheeky pinch on the bottom is ill-advised. Then again, you never know...

Alcohol

Poland is known by connoisseurs as the true home of vodka, and classics brands like Zubrowka, Zoladkowa and Wyborowa will have you seeing stars. Be careful with the Polish beer though – even the weaker ones are around 6% strong. A few too many glasses in the afternoon sun and you’ll miss your night time entertainment.

Food

Polish food is real man’s stuff. Meat, potatoes and cabbage! Some of it is surprisingly good – pierogi z miesem (dumplings with meat) and befsztyk z sosem mysliwskim (beefsteak with hunter’s sauce) will keep you big and strong. Of course being on the Baltic Coast you'll find plenty of excellent seafood restaurants, and there's a host of international options for fussy eaters.

How To Behave

Excessively loud and boisterous behaviour is frowned on in Poland, and the no-nonsense police in particular are likely to be unimpressed by drunken public antics. Generally, Brits are well thought of by the Poles, so be respectful, polite and well-behaved and you’ll get a very good reception from the locals.
