Generally speaking you won’t experience too many difficulties in Poland, which apart from the occasional public hanging, is much like most modern European countries. Here are a few tips that could prove handy when in Krakow…
Most Poles speak a bit of English, whilst many are completely fluent, so you shouldn’t have any problems communicating with the opposite sex, or asking random punters directions back to your hotel…
Most ATMs in Poland accept international credit and debit cards, or else you can change pounds and other major currencies at bureaux de change (Kantors) around the city.
Polish girls are both incredibly cute and completely charming, and after a weekend your eyes will probably be hurting from the strain of ogling at them. They are receptive to advances, but a boisterous pinch on the arse is ill-advised. You have been warned!
You can find an excellent online map to Krakow. Or pick up a printed Cracow Life guide map from the airport/tourist info point when you arrive.
Poland is famous as the home of vodka, and classics brands like Zubrowka, Zoladkowa and Wyborowa will have your head in a spin. Take it easy on the Polish beer though – even the weaker ones are around 6% strong. A few pints of those in the afternoon and you’ll miss your evening entertainment.
Polish food is real man’s stuff. Meat, potatoes and cabbage! Some of it is surprisingly good – pierogi z miesem (dumplings with meat) and befsztyk z sosem mysliwskim (beefsteak with hunter’s sauce) will keep you big and strong. If you don’t fancy going native then there are hundreds of international options, so you won’t go hungry.
Excessively loud and boisterous behaviour doesn’t go down well in Poland, and the no-nonsense police in particular are likely to take a dim view of drunken public antics. Generally, British people are very well thought of by the Poles, so be respectful, polite and well-behaved and you’ll get a very good reception from the locals.
