Broadly speaking you won’t experience too many difficulties in Poland, which apart from the occasional witch hunt, is much like most modern European nations. Here are a few gems of wisdom that could prove handy…
Most Poles speak a bit of English, whilst many are completely fluent, so you shouldn’t have any problems chatting up the barmaids, or asking random pissheads directions back to your hotel or apartment…
Whereas most ATMs in Wroclaw accept international credit and debit cards, they're not as reliable as back home so best to get a decent amount out at a time. Otherwise you can change pounds and other major currencies at bureaux de change (Kantors) around the city.
Polish girls are both cute and disarming, and after a weekend in Wroclaw your eyes will probably ache from the strain of admiring at them. They are receptive to advances, but a boisterous pinch on the posterior is ill-advised. Try old school charm to be in with a chance.

Sod Russia - Poland is the true home of vodka, and classics brands like Zubrowka, Zoladkowa and Wyborowa will leave you in no doubt as to why. Take it easy on the Polski piwo (beer) though – even the weaker ones are around 6% strong. A few of those bad boys in the afternoon and you’ll miss your evening entertainment.
Polish food is real man’s stuff. Meat, potatoes and more meat - with a side-helping of pickled cabbage! Some of it is surprisingly good – kotlet z kurczaka (chicken cutlet) and zurek (egg and sausage soup!) will keep you healthy. If you don’t fancy going native then there are scores of international restaurants, so you won’t go hungry.
Unnecessarily loud and boisterous behaviour doesn’t go down a treat in Poland, and the no-nonsense police are likely to take a dim view of drunken public antics (lifting your kilt on the Rynek being a prime example!). Generally, British people are very well thought of by the Poles, so be respectful, polite and well-behaved and you should get a warm welcome from the locals.
